HUDSON – Clarence Raphael Brown, 81, passed away peacefully Jan. 11, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility. He was surrounded by his family and his favorite pet, Jocky. Mr. Brown was born Aug. 1, 1928, in Gardiner, son of the late Margaret Bolger and Silas Clarence Brown. Mr. Brown, known to his friends and family as Ray, joined the Regular Army, Feb 6, 1946. He, together with a couple of his closest buddies, “joined up” at the age of 17. After completing Infantry Replacement Training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, he shipped out to Germany, joining Troop A, 2nd Constabulary Squadron. Cpl. Brown conducted routine patrols and maintained static posts to control the border and crossing points. The Constabulary was organized to provide unit representation within each significant geo-political boundary in the occupied zones of Post-War Germany. After completing his time with Troop A of the 2nd Constabulary, he was assigned to the 1117th MED Detachment, Camp Edwards Massachusetts. Staff Sgt. Brown, corpsman, spent the next 29 months at Iwahara Mountain Ski Lodge, Japan, administering medical aid to the more than 70 occupation personnel, OIC and staff. The nearest Japanese medical facility was located more than an hour’s drive on rough mountain roads. Staff Sgt. Brown completed his service with the Army Sept. 13, 1952. Mr. Brown worked as a nurse assistant at the Veterans Hospital, Togus, for 21 years. Mr. Brown’s hobbies and interests included playing with his grandchildren; his dog, Jocky, catching the Big Fish and helping children and families in need. He is survived by his two daughters, the oldest being Cheryl A. Brown of Hudson, and the youngest, Teresa M. Benway of Forest Hill, Md., and by his twin sons, Robert A. Brown of Solon and Raphael A. Brown of Melrose, Fla. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Hoeun Brown; seven great-grandchildren; and his grandchildren closest to him, Patrick R. Benway, Nicklaus G. Benway, Ourn Brown and Barry Brown. The family extends its gratitude to those whose generous support and prayers have helped us cope with the loss of our father. The family will hold a remembrance gathering in the spring.
