On Epoch I, a Sabre 28, he and Barbara enjoyed many weekend excursions exploring the vast number of harbors and islands of Penobscot and Blue Hill Bays with family and friends. On May 17, 1997, Jim and Rita Crabtree Grinnell were married in Camden. They enjoyed traveling in their motor home, visiting friends and relatives, and spending vacations in Florida. On Epochs II and III, a Grand Banks 32 and an Albin 36, he and Rita enjoyed several trips exploring Canada and the Maine Coast with the Points East Flotilla. They also enjoyed chartered cruises both in Europe and on the Hudson River. In December 2007, they moved from Northport to their new home in Camden. Jim, like Rita, was a lifelong learner and avid reader with a remarkable memory. He particularly enjoyed books about boats, boat building, the sea, history and engineering marvels. He loved to share his interests and knowledge through conversation and the sharing of articles and excerpts. Surviving are his wife, Rita Elliott of Camden; one sister, Barbara Shewan of Stony Brook, N.Y.; four children, Alan Elliott and his wife, Ann, of Holliston, Mass., Sandy Shute and her husband, Trent, of Lincolnville, Peter Elliott and his wife, Carolynne, of Atlanta, Ga., and Jeff Elliott and his wife, Robin, of Quakertown, Pa.; his stepchildren, David Grinnell and his wife, Sue, of Scarborough, Ann Seastrom and her husband, Kim, of Rockport and Bethany Gerrish and her husband, Jim, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 15 grandchildren, Megan, Brian, Sarah, Sean, Kirsten, Benjamin, Jessica, Quinn, Joshua, Olivia, Emily, Jennifer, Caroline, Katherine and Kevin; eight great-grand-children, Hannah, Laney, Zackery, Brianne, Hayley, Zoe, Emma and Ashley; five brothers-in-law, Robert, Philip, Everett and John Crabtree and Ken Grover of Rockland; a sister-in-law, Claire Frye of Rockport; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim was predeceased by two sisters, Gail Ambrose and Betty Mc-Dowell; three brothers-in-law, Kenneth and Richard Crabtree and Robert Grover; and one sister-in-law, Margery Grover. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at First Congregational Church, Camden, with the Rev. Kevin Pease officiating, with a reception afterward.
