SURRY – Dud Hooper quietly slipped from the mortal body he had pretty much worn out in 91 years of living Jan. 18, 2009, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind his loving family and friends, as well as a lifetime of working in many fields. When you drive on the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge, he helped build that. When you visit a home built by a local contractor, his craft is there as well. He drilled wells, shipped out with the merchant marines, built boats at Webber’s Boat Yard, clammed, fished and helped build Liberty Ships during World War II. In later years, he picked over blueberries with his buddy, Sherry, did handyman projects at a cousin’s drive-in and visited those who could no longer drive. His family can not even begin to voice their immense gratitude to the wonderful people of Hancock County Home Care and Hospice, Sue, Nan, Annie, Linda and Patty for their loving care. Also instrumental in his care were those he did not see as much in hospice, but still made certain of his well-being and peace of mind. Volunteers, Joe and Robert, were there to keep him company at times. You allowed him to have dignity in his final months. A very heartfelt thank you goes to the staff of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital that lovingly cared for him and made him so very comfortable. We are blessed to have known all of you. A special thank you goes to Ralph and Lois for all you did as well. Dad’s remains will be placed next to his wife of 60 years this summer. Family and friends will be notified of the date.
