MADAWASKA – Ransford Nathan McBreairty, 99, died, Jan. 22, 2009, at Madawaska Nursing Home. He was born July 18, 1909, in Allagash, the son of Thomas and Eunice (Kelly) McBreairty. Ransford was an honest, hardworking lumberman who loved working in the woods, at one time owning his own lumber mill. He loved being on the river, whether it was for fishing, which he never seemed to have time for, lumbering or hunting, which was another passion of his. He started working in the woods as just a young boy and became a very wise and skilled man in the ways of the lumber business. He built his home in Allagash and raised a family of six. He left Allagash in 1954 after his home burned, moving his family to Caribou where he raised his last child, a son, Alan. He returned to Allagash in 1984 to his beloved land, which had been given to him by his father and re-established a home, where he continued to live until late summer 2007. Ransford is survived by three daughters, Leola and her husband, Derald Cochran, of Bangor, Ethel Falcone of Fitchburg, Mass., and Mavis Paciorek of Leominster, Mass.; three sons and their wives, Roderick and Lois (Robbins) McBreairty of Richland, Mo., Nelson and Carolyn (Dube) McBreairty, and Alan and Nancy (Chapman) McBreairty, of Caribou; a daughter-in-law, Marlene (Monteith) McBreairty of Caribou; 30 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ida Begin of Allagash; many nieces and nephews. In addition to both of his parents, Ransford was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Eva (Hughes) McBreairty; one son, Larry McBreairty; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one great-great-grandchild; six sisters, Margaret McBreairty Hughey, Sarah Baker Haney, Mary Walker, Velma Kelly, Belva O’Leary and Edith Kelly; and three brothers, Robert, Vinal and Perry McBreairty. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at Allagash Baptist Church. A funeral service will be celebrated 1 p.m. Tuesday at Allagash Baptist Church with Pastor Dik officiating. Burial will be at Allagash Baptist Cemetery. Services conducted by Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Allagash Baptist Church Parsonage Fund.
