BANGOR – Lawrence E. “Larry” Torrey, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Sept 30, 1929, in Winter Harbor, the son of Newell H. and Sybil (Hammond) Torrey. Larry lived in Deblois and graduated from Cherryfield Academy in 1947. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Washington State Teacher’s College in 1955 and a Master’s in Education degree from the University of Maine in 1959. He taught school for 28 years in Millinocket and Bangor schools. He owned and operated Buckskin Camp for Boys, Franklin, for several years. After retirement he worked part time at Downeast Peat Bog, Deblois and at Jasper Wyman Blueberry Plant, Deblois. Larry served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea for two years during the Korean War. He was a member of Cherryville Post American Legion. Because of health issues, Larry retired early. He then spent summers in Deblois renovating the Torrey family home. His family would like to thank the staff and friends at the Airline Snack Bar in Bedding for years of love and support. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Theriault) Torrey. He was a proud father of two daughters, Dr. Susan Torrey of West Hatfield, Mass., and Mrs. Judith Hanning of Limestone. He was Papa to granddaughter, Deanna Newbegin of Bangor; and grandson, Danny Fowler of Limestone. He was a stepgrandfather to Frank Hanning and Benjamin Hanning of Presque Isle. His most recent joy was the birth of his great-grandson, Christopher Mark Newbegin of Bangor. Although Larry had no siblings, he grew up with several close cousins in Deblois including Virginia Torrey. He then married into the large Theriault family. For 21 years he and Ruth hosted the Theriault Family reunion weekend in Deblois for a family that dearly loved him. At Larry’s request, visitation will be private. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor, with Larry’s nephew, the Rev. John Skehan, celebrant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor. Committal will be held in the spring.
