NEW SWEDEN – Ervin Joseph Sweeney, 82, died Feb. 13, 2009, in Caribou. He was born Feb. 1, 1927, in Sheridan. He was educated in the Caribou school system. Ervin was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Germany and France. He was a heavy equipment operator at Loring Air Force Base, civil service for 30 years. He also worked as a welder for many years. Ervin was a member of Perkins-Plourde Post No. 136 American Legion, Stockholm, and Lister-Knowlton Post No. 9389 VFW, Caribou. He was a registered Maine guide and loved to hunt, fish, snowmobile and spend time at the camp. He married Laura (Plourde) Sweeney, Oct. 31, 1950. Surviving, in addition to his wife of New Sweden, are one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kim Sweeney of Stockholm; one sister, Ruth Treadwell and her husband, Fred, of Melbourne, Fla.; a grandson, Adam Belhumeur of Albion, R.I.; a granddaughter, Jessica Sharood and her husband, Robert, of Sanford; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Chuck Brown of Caribou, who was like a son to him.
