CORINTH and PALERMO – Josephine Ellen (Grant) Shorey, 89, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, surrounded by her loving family, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. Josephine was born Feb. 2, 1920, in Palermo, the daughter of Bertie and Geneva (Boynton) Grant. She lived many years in Palermo and moved to Corinth more than 20 years ago. She was employed for more than 35 years as an executive secretary for the state of Maine in the eye care and special services departments. After her retirement, she enjoyed helping her daughter, Carol, with the greenhouse and produce stand at Adam’s Strawberry Acres. Josephine was a past member of Methodist Church, Branch Mills. She was also involved in many organizations and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Palermo. She joined the grange in Branch Mills in 1938. Josephine was also affiliated with Queen City, Bangor, and also Pamona Grange, where she was past master. She held various offices with the grange, including past state deputy. She was a kind, gentle, loving woman, who touched the heart of everyone she met. Josephine loved cats. She had many interests, including genealogy, crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially cribbage. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, George F. Shorey; a daughter, Ida Mae Shorey; a sister, Winifred Bilodeau; and a granddaughter, Sandra Pare. Josephine is survived by her children, Carol Adams and her husband, Joseph, of Corinth, David Shorey and wife, Dottie, and Jane Hamilton, all of Palermo; a sister, Virginia Boudreau and husband, Francis, of Clinton; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, 207 Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, where a funeral service will take place 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.
