BAR HARBOR – Mary Elizabeth Cantwell, 81, passed away Feb. 16, 2009, in Bar Harbor. Born May 14, 1927, in the Panama Canal Zone to Lillian (Chase) Proctor and E. Tyler Proctor Sr., Mary grew up in Bar Harbor and various other worldly locales as her father pursued his Navy career. Known to many as “Mrs. C,” “Momma Mary,” “Grammie Mary” or just “Mrs. Cantwell,” Mary will be remembered for her years as librarian at Jesup Memorial Library, Bar Harbor. Mary will also be remembered as a warm, motherly woman who opened her heart and home to many people in need of a sympathetic ear or a friend, whether they be friends of her daughters or those friends she met out and about in Bar Harbor. Mary married John F. Cantwell Jr., in 1948, forming yet another traveling Navy family. John and Mary returned to Bar Harbor in 1960, making a home with their three daughters on Ledgelawn Avenue. After John passed away in 1967, Mary eventually found herself employed at Jesup Memorial Library, Bar Harbor, a career that would span more than 25 years. Mary is survived by three daughters, Linda Campbell and husband, Ernest, of Bass Harbor, Trisha Cantwell and husband, Alan Keene of Bar Harbor, and Jane Cantwell and Mieke Brauer, of Seattle. Mary also leaves grandchildren, Jonathan Parsons, Samantha Parsons, Amy Cantwell Keene and Cassandra Cantwell Keene; as well as many extended family members and good friends. She was predeceased by her husband, John F. Cantwell Jr.; her brother, E. Tyler Proctor Jr.; and her niece, Anna Proctor. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Bar Harbor, with Father John O’Hara officiating. Spring interment will be at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor. If friends desire they may make contributions in Mary’s memory to Jesup Memorial Library, 34 Mount Desert St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
