HANCOCK – John J. Delaney, 73, formerly of Mechanic Street, Portland, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2009, at his home. John was born Feb. 2, 1936, in Portland, a son of Edward L. and Mary Frances (Levesque) Delaney. John attended Cheverus and was a 1955 graduate of Portland High School. After graduating from Portland, John joined the Air Force. He worked at Burnham and Morrill. John also worked for the post office, where he retired as a letter carrier in 1992. After retiring, John moved to Cranberry Island and then later to Hancock in 2005. He spent many winters in Florida. While in Florida, John enjoyed walking the beaches. Since living in Hancock, John met daily with his friends at Tideway Market. John was a former communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Portland. John was predeceased by his mother and father; a sister, Catherine A. Lorello; and a brother, James L. Delaney. He is survived by two sisters, Mary S. Burns of Cape Elizabeth and Dorothy A. Larsen and her husband, Bernard, of Portland; two brothers, Edward L. Delaney Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Philadelphia and Robert W. Delaney and his wife, Marie, of Portland; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Portland. Interment with military honors will be afterward at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to Westbrook Animal Refuge, P.O.
