Maine splits
At Conway, S.C., Cayleigh Montano tossed a two-hit shutout as the University of Maine beat Coastal Carolina University 9-0 Saturday. Appalachian State University defeated the Black Bears on Sunday 7-3. On Saturday, Montano allowed no runs, two hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings. Alexis Souhlaris homered and singled with three runs scored for the Black Bears. Kirsten Allen doubled and singled with two RBIs while Terren Hall and Stephanie George each drove in two runs. Mecaela Ballard and Morgan Dodd singled for Coastal Carolina. On Sunday, Katie Boyd had a double and a single with three RBIs to pace Appalachian State. Ashley Stubbs hit a double and two singles and Ashley Gaston knocked in two runs. Ashley Waters paced Maine with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. The Bears committed four errors.

UMFK sweeps
At Potsdam, N.Y. and Paul Smiths, N.Y., the University of Maine-Fort Kent outscored the State University of New York at Canton 45-31 in the second half Saturday to win 82-71. The Bengals also defeated Paul Smith’s College 80-62 Sunday. On Saturday, Brandon Fox led UMFK with 21 points. Jimmy Lopez scored 20 points and Hamill Bassue added 10 rebounds, nine points and seven assists. Tony Valentin led SUNY Canton with 27 points. On Sunday, Lopez paced the Bengals with 22 points. Ilija Kalajdzic scored 12 points. Jimmy Noel scored 23 points for Paul Smith’s.

At Standish, Tyler Kelley posted 12 points to lead Saint Joseph’s by Lasell College. Ray Eatmon chipped in with 10 points for the Monks. Junior Sainval scored 19 points to pace Lasell.

At Williamstown, Mass., Blake Schultz registered 21 points to lead Williams by Bates College of Lewiston in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC tournament. Chris Wilson paced Bates with 12 points. Ben Thayer scored 11 points while Alex Gallant and Scott Place added 10 each.

At Waterville, Mark Phillips and Will Hanley combined for 22 points and 10 rebounds in the second half to lead No. 5 Bowdoin College of Brunswick by No. 4 Colby in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC tournament. Phillips finished with 15 points while Hanley scored 13 for the Polar Bears. Artie Cutrone paced Colby with 13 points while Michael Russell added 10.
Southern Maine 88, Western Connecticut 72
At Gorham, John Sewall posted a game-high 21 points to lead the University of Southern Maine by Western Connecticut State University. Andy Tracy scored 18 points for the Huskies. Greg Whitaker netted 13 points while Otis smith added 10. Marcus Mann scored 16 points to pace Western Connecticut.
Maine Maritime 74, Castleton 62
At Castleton, Vt., Paul Campbell tallied 18 points to propel Maine Maritime Academy by Castleton State College. Jake Manner and Derek DiFrederico scored 14 points apiece while Bryant Ciomei added 12 for the Mariners. Michael Carrier paced Castleton with 20 points.
Green Mountain 99, Husson 96
At Poultney, Vt., on Saturday, Fabian Ferreira led a quintet of Green Mountain double-figure scorers with 22 points as the hosts beat Husson. Rui Carmo netted 21 points and Scott McGuinness tallied 18 for the winners. Matt MacKenzie led Husson University of Bangor with a game-high 24 points. Brock Bradford scored 21 points, dished out 12 assists and made five steals. Jay Uhrin scored 16 points while Scott Kissinger and Nick Perras added 13 and 10, respectively.
UMF 67, Johnson State 63
At Johnson, Vt., Andrew Dean led five University of Maine-Farmington scorers in double figures with 17 points as the Beavers topped Johnson State College. Eric Lelansky scored 15 points while Josh Tanguay added 11 for the Beavers. Eric Taylor and Ted Neil netted 10 points apiece. Bobby Shedd paced Johnson State with 31 points.

UMFK 58, SUNY Canton 48
At Potsdam, N.Y., Kristen Violette went 11-for-12 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line to total 27 points and lead the University of Maine-Fort Kent past State University of New York-Canton on Saturday. The win, combined with a UM-Presque Isle loss on Sunday, clinched the No. 1 seed for the Bengals for the Sunrise Conference tournament. It was the 17th straight win for UMFK. Ashley Ames totaled 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Bengals. Brittany Kenyon led the Kangaroos with 18 points. Jackie Maynard added 10 points.
Bowdoin 85, Williams 52
At Brunswick, Jill Henrikson tallied 15 points to lead top-seeded Bowdoin by Williams in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC tournament. Leah Rubega scored 12 points while Maria Noucas added 11 for the Polar Bears. Jill Greenberg and Chessie Jackson paced Williams with 13 points each.

At Amherst, Mass., Jaclyn Daigneault scored a game-high 22 points to lead Amherst College by Colby College of Waterville in the NESCAC quarterfinals. Julianne Kowalski paced Colby with nine points.

At Standish, Saint Joseph’s defeated Lasell College to secure the No. 8 seed in the GNAC tournament. Alysn Ludwig and Carolyn Freeman led Saint Joseph’s with 14 points each. Ashley Geel scored 13 points while Meghan Daigle added 11. Katie Schumitz paced Lasell with 15 points.

At Lewiston, Michelle Royals scored 23 points to lead No. 5 Trinity by No. 4 Bates in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC championship. Val Beckwith paced Bates with 17 points. Lauren Yanofsky posted 14 points while Annie Burns and Jessie Igoe each had 11.

At Gorham, Melissa Teel scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to spark Western Connecticut State by the University of Southern Maine. Kristi Violette paced Southern Maine with 14 points. Kaylie DeMillo scored 12 points while Nicole Paradis chipped in with 11.
Castleton 65, Maine Maritime 57
At Castleton, Vt., Jess Banks registered 19 points to lead Castleton State College by Maine Maritime Academy. Tatum Welch led Maine Maritime of Castine with a game-high 24 points. Jessica Stahl chipped in with 11 points.
Rollins scores 1,000th point
Husson 66, Green Mountain 57
At Poultney, Vt., senior guard Jenny Rollins of Corinth scored the 1,000th point of her career to help the Eagles secure the NAC regular-season title with a victory. Shelby Bradford powered Husson with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Bree Hanscom posted 15 points and six rebounds. Rollins finished with five points for the Eagles, who overcame an 11-point halftime deficit. Christina Chamberlin sparked Green Mountain with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
UMF 71, Johnson State 60
At Farmington, Caitlin Laflin and Erin Porter each posted a double-double to spark the University of Maine-Farmington by Johnson State. Porter scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Laflin tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds. Brittany York added 12 points for the Beavers. Staci Cutting led Johnson State with 16 points.

UMaine splits with Vermont
At Burlington, Vt., Jennie Gallo scored in the fourth round of shootouts Sunday, breaking the 1-1 tie and giving the University of Maine the shootout win over Vermont in its final game of the season. The Catamounts won Saturday’s game 1-0. On Sunday, Vanessa Vani scored two goals for the 5-23-5 Black Bears, ending her career with 99 goals, third most in team history. Gallo and Myri Croussette provided two assists each. Brittany Nelson and Sarah Smiddy scored for 7-25-2 Vermont. Genevieve Turgeon saved 47 of 49 shots for Maine while Vermont’s Ashley Walenty made 22 saves on 24 shots. On Saturday, Peggy Wakeham scored the only goal of the game with 2:35 remaining in the third period. Caitlin Whitlock stopped 17 shots to earn the shutout for the Catamounts. Turgeon made 24 saves for the Bears.
