ELLSWORTH – Ward A. Carter, 91, died Feb. 22, 2009, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Jan. 15, 1918, in Surry, the son of Maynard S. and Christena (McAuley) Carter. Ward served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He worked for the city of Ellsworth for many years and Ellsworth Public Library. He loved nature and enjoyed working on his land and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jessie; and stepdaughter, Janis Piper, both of Ellsworth; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Sumner Carter; and sister, Eleanor Carlisle. The family thanks Bob and Sara Hessler and the Pierson family for their kindness shown to Ward. Private services will be held at a later date.
