HODGDON – Barbara D. Knowles, 79, died Feb. 22, 2009, in Bangor. She was born Oct. 6, 1929, in Camden, the daughter of Philip and Marietta (Simpson) Bickford. She graduated from Eastern Maine General Hospital as an registered nurse, volunteered for Aroostook Area on Aging, Meals on Wheels and was a member of Hodgdon Methodist Church. She is survived by three children, Michael and his wife, Cathy, of Saco, Kathy Blanchette and her husband, Tim, of Houlton, Philip and his wife, Susan, of Sherman; eight grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Debbie Benn of Hodgdon; a sister, Donalene Blackie and her husband, James, of Hodgdon; and a close friend, Norma Folsom, whom she worked with in nursing home licensing and certification, where she was admired for her professionalism as well as her for her compassion. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; and a son, David. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Hodgdon Methodist Church with the Rev. Marilyn Rhodin officiating. Spring interment will be at Hodgdon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hodgdon Methodist Church, care of Bowers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 579, Houlton, ME 04730.
