WEST NEWBURY, Mass., and ST. FRANCIS – Leon L. Jandreau, 93, died peacefully Feb. 25, 2009, at his residence in West Newbury, Mass. Leon was born Nov. 8, 1915, in St. Francis, the son of Peter and Egline (Thibodeau) Jandreau. Leon was a past member of VFW Lozier O’Grady Post No. 9609, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, both of Fort Kent, American Legion of St. Francis Post No. 180 and Fort Kent Golf Course. He became a licensed Maine state hunting and fishing guide in 1958 to 1973. He was employed at the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years until his retirement in October 1981. He was also the Scoutmaster in St. Francis from 1954 to 1959 and served in the Katahdin Area Council/Boy Scouts of America. He was also secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as town manager from 1984 to 1987, while overseeing the town water project. Leon also served in the U.S. Army as staff sergeant in the 168th Army Postal Unit during World War II. He is survived by one daughter, Ann and her husband, Bruce LaFlamme, of West Newbury, Mass.; four sons, Jim “Chum” and his wife, Judy Jandreau, of Rock Hall, Md., John and his wife, Tracy Jandreau, of Charlotte, N.C., Tom and his wife, Dawn Jandreau, of Winterport, and Bill and his wife, Cindy, of El Paso, Texas; one brother, Ned Jandreau of Bristol, Conn.; six grandsons and their wives, Mark Jandreau of Largo, Fla., James and his wife, Stephanie Jandreau, of Dracut, Mass., Joel Jandreau of Linden, Va., Ryan and his wife, Nicole Jandreau, of Wells, Adam Jandreau and companion, Duska Sturrup, of Tucson, Ariz., and Robert Jandreau of Centralia, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Coy, Lucas and Julianna Jandreau of Dracut, Mass., and Alex Jandreau of Ledyard, Conn.; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Cora (O’Clair) Jandreau, in 1979; one son, Melvin Jandreau, in 2006; four sisters, Adele, Adeline, Philippa and Anita; and four brothers, Edgar, Rudolph, Roger and Peter. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Catholic Church, St. Francis. Spring burial will be held May 12 at the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a donation in Leon’s memory may do so to St. Charles Catholic Church, St. Francis. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
