BREWER, AVON PARK, Fla., and SOUTH PORTLAND – Helen Knox (Leach) Stanley, 102, wife of the late Leslie V. Stanley, died March 10, 2009, at a Brewer nursing center. She was born Dec. 30, 1906, in Rockland, the daughter of Leon and Lucy (Pattern) Leach. Helen was a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She truly enjoyed her later years in Florida playing cards and shuffle boarding with her many friends. All enjoyed her smiling temperament, quick wit and clever scrabble playing. She loved to cook and entertain her many relatives and friends through the years. Surviving are two children, Durmont Stanley and his wife, Arsenia, of Schererville, Ind., and Sibyl S. Mahoney of Brewer; four grandchildren, Chris Stanley and his wife, Arlene, of North Yarmouth, John Stanley of Schererville, Stanley Mahoney and his wife, Adrienne, of Massapequa Park, N.Y., and John Mahoney and his wife, Sara Yasner, of Clifton; two great-granddaughters, Cassandra and Jacklyn of North Yarmouth; five great-grandsons, Dennis, Samuel and Liam Stanley of New York and Seamus and Emmett of Clifton; and a sister, Mary Anderson, formerly of Oxbow. She was predeceased by her husband in 1995; a granddaughter, Pamela Ann Mahoney in 1975; two sisters, Sibyl and Maybelle; and two brothers, Clyde and Leon. The family wishes to thank Ellen Leach Memorial Home, Woodlands of Brewer and Brewer Rehab & Living Center. Those who extended their kindnesses and love certainly enriched Helen’s last 11 years. There will be a private graveside service in the spring when Helen and Leslie will be buried together at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Clifton.
