NEWPORT – Mary D. Brooker, 66, died March 17, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 26, 1942, in St. Francis, a daughter of Lugin and Edwidge (Goslin) Gagnon. She had been employed at Cary Memorial Hospital, Caribou. She moved to Newport in 1975 with her family. Mary owned and operated The Thrift Shop and later co-owned Bates Bargain Mart, both of Newport, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed reading and crafts. She is survived by a son, Kerry and wife, Maggie Olmstead, of Clarksville, Tenn.; two daughters, Annette and husband, John Clark, of Dixmont, and Amanda and husband, Ron Cook, of Etna; two sisters, Mary Lou Gagnon of Caribou and Marie Wasson of Fort Fairfield; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Che Collins. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward, in 1983; two sons, Kevin Lee Olmstead, in 1993 and Richard E. Brooker, in 2007; and two brothers-in-law, Harold Gagnon and Gary Wasson. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating.
