AUGUSTA – Dorothy M. Browne, 85, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta. She was born May 10, 1923, in Limestone, daughter of Fred and Jen (McLaughlin) Hechler. She grew up in Aroostook County and was a graduate of Aroostook State Normal School. She later went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine, Orono. Dorothy worked as a teacher in Limestone, Manchester and Vassalboro, retiring as a principal in Vassalboro. Mrs. Browne was a member of the University of Maine Alumni Association, Kennebec Valley Alumni Association, was a charter member of Riverside Neighbors Club and was a member of St. Michael’s Parish, Augusta, attending St. Andrews Catholic Church. Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Cyril Hechler. She is survived by her husband, Stanley Browne; her three sons, Charles Browne of Gering, Neb., Robert Browne and his wife, Carol, of Winslow, and Thomas Browne and his partner, Susan Newkirk-Sanborn, of Waterville; her daughters, Berniece Browne of Silver Spring, Md., and Barbara Largent and her husband, Mike, of Salem, Ore.; her brother, Roy Hechler and his wife, Rita, of Concord, N.H.; her sister, Florence Young and her husband, Winston, of Bangor; her grandchildren, Danielle Browne, Whitney Browne, Jared Browne, Sarah Johnson and Emily Johnson; along with several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at the new Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of choice. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta.
