Maine’s Green Party formed in May 1984, six months before the national party was

established. Though it counts just 31,000 members, its impact has exceeded that

proportion of the electorate. Has the Green Party been largely a force for good, perhaps

keeping both Democrats and Republicans on their toes, or is it a perennial spoiler with an

agenda that appeals to only a fringe element of the electorate?
