BLUE HILL – Florence Iola (Grindle) Sherman, 84, died May 15, 2009, at a Deer Isle health care facility. She was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Blue Hill, daughter of Ernest Linwood and Rena Mae (Gross) Grindle. She graduated valedictorian from George Stevens Academy, Class of 1942. Florence worked at Pratt & Whitney, Hartford, Conn., then graduated from Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing in 1947. Florence married Eddie Sherman in 1948 and they settled in North Brooklin, where she worked at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital on and off for 40 years. She did private duty nursing for E.B. White and others. In 1972 they moved to Blue Hill and operated a seafood business. Florence was a member of Blue Hill Baptist Church. She will be sadly missed by all her family and many friends. She is survived by her son, Michael Sherman and his wife, Roxanne; two daughters, Deborah Sherman and her husband, Doug Terry, and Heidi Goode and her husband, Allan; sister, Georgene Allen; brothers, Basil Grindle and Jerry Grindle; daughter-in-law, Nancy B. Sherman; grandchildren, James, Margaret, Thomas, Laura, Madeline, Rosanna, Carrie, Dorothy and John; and four great-grandchildren. Florence was predeceased by her husband, Edward; son, Reginald; sister, Phyllis Herrick; half sister, Doris Owen; and half brother, Cecil Grindle. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at First Baptist Church of Blue Hill with the Revs. Steve and Sheila Heneise officiating.
