BANGOR – Janet W. Mixer, 75, died peacefully May 15, 2009, surrounded by her family at her home, after a long illness. She was born July 27, 1933, in Winchester, Mass., the daughter of Gordon W. and Jeanne (Porter) White. She was a graduate of Bridgewater State Teachers College, Class of 1954, and she earned her master’s degree in education from Boston University. Janet taught fifth grade in Bangor for 35 years. She was a member of Penobscot Retired Teachers Association, Maine Teachers Association and National Education Association. Janet was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. She also enjoyed cooking and entertaining for her family and friends. After retiring in 1991, she traveled the world, enjoying at least one trip each year. In addition she loved spending several weeks yearly at her timeshare at Samoset Resort. Surviving are two daughters, Donna Mixer Guppy and her husband, Andrew, of Palermo and Deborah Mixer Roy and her fiance, Jim Nadeau, of Bangor; three grandchildren, Sarah and her partner, Bob, of Solana Beach, Calif., Meleah and Cameron of Bangor; twin sister, Isobel M. Gordon and her husband, Robert, of Casa Grande, Ariz.; three nieces, Jeanne, Shelley and Robin; and dearest friend, Lila Richmond of Bangor. The family gives special thanks to St. Joseph Home Health and Hospice and Premier Home Care for their dedicated service and care. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, at Brookings-Smith, Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor. Private interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery at a later date.
