PARKMAN, Maine — Thieves broke into and ransacked the town office sometime between Saturday night and Tuesday morning, stealing an undisclosed amount of money, police said Tuesday.
A back door was forced open to gain entry into the two-story building, according to Lt. Robert Young of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.
Once inside, Young said, the thieves pulled files from filing cabinets and left them on the floor. They also opened desk drawers, forced open office doors, ripped open envelopes and forced open a safe.
Young would not disclose the exact amount of money taken from the safe, but said it was more than $100 and less than $1,000.
“They were looking for money,” Young said. “They damaged three doors, and the back door leading in will need to be replaced. Other than that, they ransacked, but they didn’t break things.”
He said office workers found quite a mess when they arrived at work Tuesday morning.
