BANGOR – Robert E. Small, 76, died May 19, 2009, after a long illness. He was born Sept. 5, 1932, in East Machias, the son of Donald W. and Mabel (Bangs) Small. Bob graduated from Washington Academy, Class of 1950. After graduation he attended Husson College and the University of Maine, Orono. Bob served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He married Roberta Johnston, Sept. 10, 1955. They celebrated 54 years of marriage in September 2008. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Nancy; and a brother, Donald. He is survived by his wife, Roberta (Johnston) Small; his sons, Jonathan and his wife, Monica, of Hampden, Gregory and his wife, Carolyn, of Winthrop and Michael and his wife, Erin, of Hermon; his daughters, Leslie Small and her husband, Dale, of Brewer, Jennifer Gulesian and her husband, Decran, of Orrington, Rebecca Illingworth of Eddington, and Kathryn Narofsky and her husband, Roland, of Hampden; and seven grandchildren, Dr. Benjamin Gray, Kevin Gray, Lauren Gray, Ellen Small, Emily Illingworth, Brian Bates II and Sophia Norofsky. He is also survived by his brother, Albert Small of Surry; his sisters, Barbara Sutherland of Hanover, Mass., and Debbie Geel of Ellsworth. He is also survived by a special brother-in-law and friend, Kenton Nadeau of Caribou. At Bob’s request, there will be no public service. A private family gathering will be held.
