NEWPORT – Bessie B. Hamm, 91, passed away May 23, 2009, at a Bangor nursing home, after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 24, 1917, in Linneus, the last of seven children born to Merrill and Etta (Dickinson) Bubar. When she was a child, the family moved to St. Albans where she grew up on their farm. Bessie graduated from Newport High School and attended Pleasant Street Christian Church, Corinna. She was a member of Nokomis Chapter No. 42, Order of the Eastern Star. She married Herbert Ray Hamm and together they owned Corinna Insurance Agency for many years. Bessie was a very independent lady who maintained her home for many years after her husband passed away and, until recently, required little help with her daily life. Some of Bessie’s closest friends, including Dorinne Eastman, Patty Cray, Donna Hatch and others have assisted her in maintaining an independent lifestyle, which she greatly appreciated. Although Bessie and Ray had no children of their own she had cherished relationships with her nieces and nephews, and their children. She will be greatly missed by all of her extended family and friends from all over the state of Maine. She spent the last few weeks of her life at Bangor Nursing and Rehab. She appreciated the other residents and especially the staff who took good care of her needs and kept her family advised of her daily health. She is survived by a sister, Mary Wilson of Houlton; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including great-great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-great-nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Sheldon, Milton and George Bubar; and two sisters, Kathleen Griffith and Helen Clark. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport. Friends may call noon until the time of service. Burial will be at Corinna Village Cemetery. Those who wish may sign an online guest register and leave written tributes at www.CrosbyNeal.com.
