BREWER and PRINCETON – Esther (Andrews) Cox, wife of the late Harold R. Cox, passed away May 26, 2009, after a long illness at a Bangor health care facility. She was born July 1, 1923, in Princeton, the daughter of Harry and Annie (McLellan) Andrews. Esther grew up on the family farm and graduated from Princeton High School in 1941. She was a graduate of Washington State Normal School, Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Maine, Orono. After trying a career in teaching and working in a defense plant in Connecticut, she answered her calling to be a nurse. Esther took great pride in being a nurse. She worked tirelessly on archiving the history of Eastern Maine General Hospital/Husson College School of Nursing. In 2004, Esther was recognized for this work when she was inducted into the Husson College Alumni Hall of Fame. Esther was a quiet, practical and caring woman who possessed a keen intelligence and strong love of family. She was a working mom, shuttling her children to activities, teaching Sunday school and leading a Girl Scout troop, all while working nights as a registered nurse at Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was active in Democratic politics and assisted her husband, Harold R. Cox in his five successful runs for the Maine House of Representatives. Esther’s happiest times included days spent with her family. She eagerly awaited the annual McLellan family reunion. She loved the coast of Maine, drives with her husband, playing with her grandchildren, political discussions and a good book. Esther will be remembered lovingly by her three children, Margaret and her husband, Robert Murray of Bangor, Richard Cox of Modesto, Calif., and Francie Soucy of Auburn; five grandchildren, Erin and Dillon Murray, Lindsay, Blaine and Blake Cox; her two sisters-in-law, Priscilla Andrews of Princeton and Mary Martin of Old Town; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her three brothers, Archie, Brewer and Richard Andrews. Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Princeton Cemetery, Princeton. Gifts in her memory may be sent to Westgate Manor Activities Fund, 750 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401 or Alzheimer’s Association, 170 U.S. Route One, Suite 250, Falmouth, ME 04105.
