ORLAND – Arthur Gray Jr., 78, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Castine, the son of Arthur Gray Sr. and Helen (Bowden) Gott. He was educated in Bucksport schools, graduating from Bucksport High School. After graduation Arthur served in the U.S. Navy for four years. After the Navy he owned and operated Gray’s Roofing in Florida. Upon returning to Maine he worked for 30 years for St. Regis Paper Co., retiring from Champion Paper Co. Arthur enjoyed fishing, playing cards and Beano. He was a member of Bucksport Rod and Gun Club. Arthur is survived by his wife, Deborah Gray of Orland; one sister, Ethlynn Blackburn and her husband, Jim, of Florida; two daughters, Linda Cockman and her husband, David, of North Carolina and Robin Scott of Florida; two sons, Edward “Ted” Gray and his wife, Susanne, and Timothy Gray and his wife, all of Florida; a special granddaughter, Chrystal Blue Gray of Florida; as well as several other grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Arthur was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, George and Gertrude Bowden; one sister, Eloise (Gott) Brown; two brothers, Linwood and Ralph Bowden; and a special daughter-in-law, Brenda Gray Knost. At Arthur’s request, there will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur’s memory may be made for stem cell research at The Jackson Laboratory, 600 Main St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
