LYNN HAVEN, Fla. – Capt. George Edwin Smith, 72, passed away Nov. 22, 2008. He was born in Portland, son of Capt. and Mrs. Robert W. Smith of Brooksville. Capt. Smith graduated from Maine Maritime Academy, Class of 1956. He served with the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marine, rising to the rank of master with Trans World Marine Corps, having held two commands with that shipping company. In 1967 he was appointed as a Panama Canal pilot, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of Brooksville Rosier/Rainbow Grange; Gov. Brooks Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, Brooksville; Ira Berry Masonic Lodge No. 128, Blue Hill; Hancock Masonic Lodge No. 4, Castine; Scottish Rite Bodies, Portland; and Anah Shriners Temple, Bangor. He was a life member of Boston Marine Society and Council of American Master Mariners. He was a member of The International Organization of Masters Mates & Pilots for 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Theadora M. Smith; and brother, Robert W. Smith Jr. of Westbrook. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at South Brooksville Church.
