FREEPORT – Joseph Henry Madore, 87, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 3, 2009. He was born July 10, 1921, in Wallagrass, the eighth child of 13 to George and Alice (Charette) Madore. He joined the National Guard in 1936, was in the Civilian Conservation Corps – CCC, served in Princeton, and he then went back to the National Guard. When World War II broke out, he joined the Army and was sent to the South Pacific with the 103rd Infantry 43rd Division, B Company. He landed at five beach heads: New Guinea, New Georgia, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Philippines. He received the Bronze Star for gallantry and was discharged from B Company, Aug. 25, 1945. After the service, he worked for Operating Engineers with Local 4 out of Boston as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Elks, Millinocket; CCC; American Legion Post No. 83, Freeport; VFW Post No. 10529, Yarmouth; and Harraseeket Grange 9, Freeport. He married Dawn I. Hope, Sept. 9, 1946, and they had one son, David. Dawn passed away July 25, 1995. He married Anne Benaris of Freeport, Oct. 4, 1997, in Freeport. He enjoyed square dancing and his camp in Casco. But, the one thing he enjoyed the most was operating his Kubota tractor and his golf cart. He is survived by his wife, Anne of Freeport; his son, David of Freeport; brothers, Gilman and Richard Madore of Millinocket; three grandchildren, David Jr. of Brunswick, Dorothy of Freeport and Deidre of Bedford, N.H.; one great-granddaughter, Cassidy; three stepchildren, Ronald Grant of Freeport, Richard Gonye of North Yarmouth and Robin Penrod of Falmouth; and five stepgrandchildren, Erika, Emily and Bill Penrod, Thomas and Lauren Gonye. Relatives and friends are invited 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, where a trisagion service will be held 3 p.m. with Father Constantine. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 133 Pleasant St., Portland. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, at Millinocket Cemetery.
