SCARBOROUGH – Lawrence A. Trout, 87, passed away peacefully June 1, 2009, at Barron Center, Portland. Larry was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Trenton, N.J., the son of LeRoy Trout and Emily (Hall) Trout. Upon the passing of his father, Larry, along with his mother; brother, Allen; and sister, Dorothy, moved to Scarborough. That was in 1938, where he remained until his death. Larry attended several trade schools for auto mechanics, welding and refrigeration repair. During World War II, Larry worked as a welder on the Liberty Ships at the shipyard in South Portland. That is where he met the love of his life, Donella. They had two children, Robin and David. They raised their family on a farm in West Scarborough until they moved to Greenacres. Larry worked for several years at Hughes Body Shop; he then worked the rest of his working life at St. Johnsbury Trucking. They then moved to Hillcrest Retirement Community. For 17 years they wintered in Florida, returning in the spring. They sold their home in Florida so they could help with the care of their “special” great-granddaughter, Brittney. This was one of the greatest periods of their life. Donna and Larry enjoyed golfing, biking and bowling. They also enjoyed long rides – Larry would take Donna to Vermont just for lunch. Larry was predeceased by his mother and father; his loving wife, Donella, in 2005; brother, Allen and his wife, Catherine; and his sister, Dorothy and her husband, George Nickerson. He is survived by his daughter, Robin and her husband, John Coffin, of Freeport; his son, David and his wife, Debbi, of Westbrook; his nephew, Stephen Nickerson and his wife, Louise, of Westbrook; his seven wonderful grandchildren, Shari and her husband, Larry Cochran, of Cumberland, Laurie Cochran and her husband, John Emery, of North Yarmouth, Lisa Cochran of Freeport, Amy and her husband, Eric Furhmann, of Saco, Jeffrey Trout of Old Orchard Beach, Mandy and her husband, Chris Lavellee, of Standish, and Jermey Berry with his fiancee, Kayler, of Westbrook; and with special pride his seven great-grandchildren, Brittany, Grace and KC of Cumberland, Skyla of Freeport, Shawn and Stephanie of Saco, and Caleb of Standish. Robin and David want to give a special thank you to Marlene Horne of Scarborough who kept a watchful eye on Dad and cooked him so many wonderful meals. They also want to give a thank you to the wonderful caring staff at the Barron Center Zolov Unit; they took such great care of our dad and our family during a very difficult time in our life. At Dad’s request, there will be a private burial at the family cemetery in Eddington. Arrangements are by Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.
