INDIAN TOWNSHIP – Delia Rose Mitchell, 92, the eldest tribal member at Indian Township, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Atlantic Rehab & Nursing Center, Calais. Delia was born Aug. 30, 1916, at Peter Dana Point, daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Mell) Mitchell. She was a communicant of St. Ann Parish at Peter Dana Point and a former member of Senior Companions. Delia will be remembered for her independence and her skills in basket weaving. She enjoyed making baskets, drumming, singing, cooking, dancing and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, Delia was predeceased by two brothers, James Mitchell and Joseph Socoby; a sister, Mary Gabriel; one niece, Sylvia Gabriel; and two nephews, Richard and Simmon Gabriel. Surviving are her son, Harold Lewey of Indian Township; a sister, Doris Chapman of Indian Township; four grandchildren, Warren “Matt” Lewey and Cheyenne Lewey, both of Indian Township, Gordon Newell of Baileyville and Martha Lewey and her husband, Joseph Pilon, of Arizona; two great-grandchildren, Shane and Aneea Lewey; her special niece, Linda Dana and her daughter, Keya Newell, both of Indian Township; several nieces, nephews and her many feline companions. A special thanks to her nephew, Roger Ritter of Indian Township. Visiting hours will be held beginning 2 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Saturday at her sister’s home, 83 Hemlock Point Road, Indian Township. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Parish, Peter Dana Point, by the Rev. James Plourde. Burial will be afterward at Tribal Cemetery.
