NEW SWEDEN – Shirley B. Erickson, 69, died June 10, 2009, with her family at her side, in Mars Hill. She was born Aug. 9, 1939, in New Sweden, the daughter of the late Oscar and Bertha (Anderson) Erickson. Shirley worked for Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles at the Caribou office for more than 40 years. She enjoyed interacting with the many generations of “County” people who would come by for licenses and registrations. She was recognized for her many years of service and retired as the Caribou branch manager. She was an active and devoted member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church where she served on the parish council, was president of WELCA, treasurer of the memorial committee and was also a member of the Happy Followers Group. In her spare time, Shirley volunteered with several organizations, including Cary Medical Center and activities in the New Sweden community. She took special pride in her Scandinavian heritage, celebrating Midsommer and holidays with special music and decorations. Shirley was a person who did not seek credit and gave of her time and energy to benefit others, and will always be remembered for her wonderful laugh and beautiful smile. She will be sadly missed and remembered by her brothers and sisters, Irene (Erickson) Patrick and her husband, Clayton, of Woodland, Oscar Erickson and his wife, Virginia, of Caribou, Richard Erickson and his wife, Janet, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Patricia (Erickson) Bechtel and her husband, Dick, of Caribou, and Janet Erickson of New Sweden; her nieces and nephews, Jasmine Miller, Valerie Peterson and her husband, Glenn, Vicki Duffy, Kristi Erickson, Scott Erickson, Duane Patrick, Dean Erickson and his wife, Susan, Tania Erickson and her husband, Tom, Carmen Patrick, Vanessa Erickson, Stasia Erickson, Troy Erickson, and Erick Bechtel and his wife, Nichole; 14 great-nieces and great-nephews, six great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and one very special great-niece, Kate, who always brought a smile to her face. Shirley was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick and William Erickson. Family and friends are invited to come and share memories and celebrate all that Shirley brought to their lives 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gordon Compton officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Morgan.
