WASHBURN – Owen C. Allen, 79, died Thursday evening June 11, 2009, at The Aroostook Medical Center, Presque Isle. He was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Augusta, son of Berton and Ada (Barnes) Allen. He was raised by his aunt, Olive and uncle, Murray Allen, after his parents died. Owen served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the 45th Division 180th HGA Company. He worked as a salesman for Red Rose Tea Co., 1956-1972, and then for Durkee Foods, 1972-1995. Owen was a volunteer firefighter for Washburn Fire Department for 35 years. He was a member and past commander of Oscar-Dow No. 148 American Legion Post, Washburn. He attended Lidstone Memorial United Methodist Church, Washburn. He is survived by his wife, Margarett (Umphrey) Allen of Washburn; a stepson, Gerald “Tommy” Vaughan of Winchester, Va.; a stepdaughter, Linda Lee Bragg of Wade; a sister, Evelyn Flanagin of Washburn; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Tammy Bragg of Wade; two special nephews, Douglas Flanagin of Perham and Alan Flanagin of Presque Isle; six stepgrandchildren, Merle Bragg Jr. of Hebron, Md., Ernest Bragg of New York, O’Brien Bragg of Georgia, Brad Bragg of Washburn, Gerald Vaughan IV “TomTom” and Andrew Vaughan, both of Virginia; and six great-stepgrandchildren. Owen was predeceased by five brothers, Erbine, Beacher, Ashton, Dennis and Willis “Billy” Allen; three sisters, Eileen Quintel, Leona Gainey and June Crawford; a stepgrandchild, Jonathan Bragg; and a great-stepgrandchild, Riley Bragg. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held 1 p.m. Monday, June 15, at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Caribou, with the Rev. Dorothy Mattson officiating.
