BIRCH HARBOR – Mary Workman Forsmark, 94, died June 14, 2009, at a Brewer health care facility. She was born Aug. 19, 1914, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. Irvin S. and Ruth E. (Klinger) Workman. Mary earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Ohio State University and her Master of Arts degree in social work at the University of Chicago. Her primary work for 20 years was with families and the treatment and placement of children from inadequate and disruptive homes. She also taught and supervised students and workers who were preparing for work in that field. Her first husband, Joseph C. Diggles of Chicago, died after 34 years of marriage. She later married Olof Forsmark, artist, of Birch Harbor, who died after 14 years of marriage. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, one of whom summers in Birch Harbor, Allen Workman, Charles Workman of Brookfield, Wis., and Neil Barnett of Newark, Ohio; nieces, True Moseley of Hoboken, N.J., and Sally Muller of Golden, Colo.; a half brother, John Workman of Ohio; and her special friend, George S. Hoffmann of Winter Harbor. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. June 19 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main St., Ellsworth. There will be a reception immediately after the service at Father Kenney Center. Interment will be held later in the summer.
