BUCKSPORT – On Thursday, June 11, 2009, a beautiful Indian woman by the name of Loana Lee Pomeroy Reed, 61, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – ALS. Loana was born April 25, 1948, to Joe Pomeroy of Stockton Springs and Loretta Campbell of Port Townsend, Wash. Loana graduated from Searsport High School and then worked a series of jobs throughout the years from shucking clams to delivering mail for U.S. Postal Service. In 1983, Loana married the love of her life, Lewis Reed, they fully enjoyed going to their camp with family and friends, having barbecues and get-togethers. Loana loved sharing her rich American Indian heritage. She was a direct lineal descendant of the house of Ste-tee-thlum the royal house of the S’klallam Indians of Washington state, through her great-great-grandmother, Princess Tammoe Woodmen. In Loana’s later years, she worked hard to make sure her family’s ancestry was passed down to her children and grandchildren. Loana has five children, Ralph E. Hanscom and wife, Amy, Merton P. Hanscom, Wayne D. Hanscom and wife, Lisa, Adrian C. Hanscom and wife, Crystal, and Mathew C. Reed and his wife, Desi; four stepchildren, Lynn, Jeff, Mike and Lewis Jr.; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Loana has eight beloved sisters, Lorraine Swidell, Cathy Steven and companion, Bill, Barbara Pomeroy and companion, Rich, Audrey Pomeroy, Vicky Gross and husband, Fulton, Marion Gomm and husband, Mark, Frances Pomeroy and companion, Tom, and Elizabeth Harvey and husband, James; and four brothers, Eugene Pomeroy, Ellery Pomeroy and wife, Kathy, Raymond Pomeroy and companion, Edith, and Ricky Pomeroy and wife, Barbara. Loana will be very much missed by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Mount Recluse Cemetery, Cape Jellison Road, Stockton Springs. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
