BELFAST – Joan Bohan Davenport, loving wife, mother and special sister, passed away Monday, June 15, 2009, in Bangor. She was the daughter of James and Kathleen (McGuire) Bohan, formerly of Houlton. Joan was a 1953 graduate of Houlton High School and a 1956 graduate of Eastern Maine Medical Center nursing school. She moved to Daytona Beach, Fla., where she lived for 34 years before returning to Maine in 1990. Joan had a special knack for doing many different jobs, including working as a nurse at Halifax Hospital, Daytona Beach, Fla.; as an administrative aide to Congressman Bill Chappell; and as a substitute teacher in the Daytona, Fla., area. She later returned to nursing, working with hospice in Maine. Joan’s sense of humor and honesty was unrivaled and whatever she did, she applied 100 percent effort even in fighting her illness. Her life was home, family, friends and her faith. Joan was a major presence in the lives of her family and there are no words to express their sadness and emptiness of losing her. She was an active member of Belfast United Methodist Church. Joan will be greatly missed by her loving family; her husband, Raymond “Skip” Davenport of Belfast; her son, Andrew Romano and his wife, Amie and their children, Anthony and Nicholas, of Las Vegas; sisters, Betty Brescia of Newport, Nancy Diefendorf of Solon, Susan Wood of Shrewsbury, Mass., Mary Ray of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Debbie Gold of Edgewater, Fla.; brothers, James Bohan and Brian Bohan, both of Port Orange, Fla.; and special friends, Betty York and Barbara Lavoie. Heartfelt thanks and gratitude is extended to the Rev. Dr. David Abbott and the caregivers at critical care unit and intensive care unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center for their compassionate care and support of Joan and her family during her illness. Visitation and reception will be held 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 21, with a memorial service 2 p.m. at Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast. Memorial donations may be made to Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain St., Camden.
