WOODLAND – Elbert Fowler, 88, went home to be with the Lord June 20, 2009, at his residence. He was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Woodland, the son of Aquila and Nettie (Steeves) Fowler. Elbert was a graduate of Caribou High School, Class of 1938. He was a potato and tree farmer for 41 years. Elbert was also employed with the U.S. Postal Service for 28 1/2 years and a potato inspector of the USDA for three years. Elbert belonged to Seniority, Odd Fellows Lodge and National Active and Retired Federal Employees, NARFE. He served as chaplain for the local NARFE chapter for several years. In 1999 Elbert was awarded the Best Friend Award in recognition of his volunteer service with a number of community organizations including Aroostook RSVP, Cary Medical Center, Woodland Historical Society, Red Cross Blood Drive, Cary Medical Seniority, Woodland Housing Grant, PTA Reflections Program, Northern Maine Fair, Aroostook Valley Lodge No. 88, Family Christian Center, Sno-Drifters, Inc., and Artist of the Month at Cary Medical Center. Elbert was very proud of the award. He was also on the board of directors for Agway for six years and the tax collector for the town of Woodland for many years. Elbert is survived by a son, Dana Fowler and his wife, Debbie, of Woodland; four daughters, Nancy Theriault and her husband, Lionel Jr., of Caribou, Bonnie Bishop and her husband, Michael, of Berwick, Deborah Green of Woodland and Pam Michaud and her husband, Galen, of Caribou; two brothers, Russell Fowler and his wife, Marguerite, of Spring Hill, Fla., and Dale Fowler and his wife, Betty, of Woodland; two sisters, Elizabeth Cochran of Woodland and Evelyn Gooding of Sebring, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at Family Christian Center, Presque Isle, with Pastor Gail Bellemy and Dale Nason officiating. Interment will take place 5 p.m. Tuesday at Woodland Cemetery.
