CHEBEAGUE ISLAND – Agnes “Nicky” A. Wheldon, 84, passed away June 21, 2009, in Portland. She was born in Hamburg, Ark., a daughter of Joe and Ellen (White) Higginbotham. She was a nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in Berlin, where she met Robert L. Wheldon of Chebeague Island. She and Robert married in 1947 and lived in New York and New Jersey from 1947 to 1969. The family summered on Chebeague Island and moved there permanently in 1969, wintering in Florida until 1995. Mrs. Wheldon loved golfing and helped start a children’s golf clinic on Chebeague Island. She was a member of Chebeague Island Grange and Chebeague United Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband in 2000. She is survived by a daughter, Helen L. Wheldon of Gainesville, Fla.; a son, Charles R. Wheldon and his wife, Janelle, of Bangor; grandchildren, Jason Wheldon and his wife, Nicole, and Lee Wheldon; and one great-grandchild, Katelyn. A visiting hour will be held 10-11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at Chebeague United Methodist Church, 344 North Road, Chebeague Island, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Burial will be at Chebeague Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Island Commons, 132 Littlefield Road, Chebeague Island, ME 04017-3316. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth.
