LINCOLNVILLE BEACH – Thomas Eben Flagg, 90, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at his home. Born July 24, 1918, in Belfast, he was the son of Walter F. and Nellie (Young) Flagg. His mother died of typhoid fever when he was four weeks old and he was raised by his aunt, Elizabeth (Flagg) Pendleton in Lincolnville Beach. On July 22, 1944, Tom married Mildred Louise Coathup in Belfast. They lived in Lincolnville where they raised their four children. In his younger years, Tom was an accomplished blacksmith and farrier. He later worked in construction for various contractors and for the Maine State Department of Transportation doing road work and snow plowing for 20 years. Tom was a descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims, William Brewster, Stephen Hopkins, Thomas Rogers and his son, Joseph, William Mullins and John Alden. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mildred C. Flagg of Lincolnville; three daughters, Ellen Garneau and her husband, John, of Meredith, N.H., Doris Weed and her husband, Kenneth, of Lincolnville and Jane Jipson and her husband, Dana, of Saco; five grandsons, Kenneth Weed Jr., Steven Weed, Derek Welch, Craig Welch and Trent Welch; 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas E. Flagg Jr., who died in October 2002; and three sisters, Doris Flagg, Mary Blood and Avis McDonald. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will be private and held at the family’s convenience at Hillside Cemetery, Belmont. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Lincolnville Volunteer Fire Department, 493 Hope Road, Lincolnville, ME 04849. Funeral arrangements are with Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden.
