CUTLER – Joan L. (Maker) Weaver, 68, died at her home after many years of battling cancer of one form or another. The latest three and a half year battle of a very rare form, finally took its toll Sunday, June 21, 2009, with her loving husband of nearly 48 years, Joel; her daughter, Tracy; and her son, Joel, by her side. Joan was born Sept. 9, 1940, to Douglas and Elaine Maker of Cutler, the youngest of three. Joan graduated in 1958 from Washington Academy, East Machias. Wanting to see more of the world than Washington County, she joined the U.S. Navy in 1960. After boot camp in Bainbridge, Md., and disbursing clerk school in Newport, R.I., she was stationed back at U.S. Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, Md. She met Joel, a fellow disbursing clerk, and they were eventually married Nov. 22, 1961. She fulfilled her active duty requirements and then accompanied Joel for 16 years until his retirement in March 1978, when they settled back in Cutler. While in the Navy during a three-year tour of Greece, Tracy was born in Athens. Joel was born while stationed in Newport, R.I. She did get to see a lot more than Washington County. During retirement from the Navy, Joan worked in the post office for 15 years as Postmaster relief for three different Postmasters, a job she enjoyed very much. She also enjoyed working on the lawns and in the garden, and splitting and stacking next season’s firewood, though she never did enjoy clearing the snow from the driveway. She was known to grumble now and then about the foggy Cutler days. She was predeceased by both parents; and her oldest brother, Dewey. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. July 11 at Cutler United Methodist Church.
