BROOKSVILLE, Maine — The Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled a public meeting July 9 in Brooksville to discuss a proposal for the Superfund cleanup at the former Callahan Mine.
In its announcement Friday, the EPA’s Boston office said the estimated cost of the plan is $23 million.
The Callahan mine halted operations in 1972 and the EPA added the site to the federal Superfund list 30 years later. Officials have said that long-term exposures to the levels of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead and zinc found at the site could pose a health threat.
The EPA plans to follow up with a hearing on Aug. 6 to receive public comment.
