This Independence Day we have an invitation from Lt. Col. Brenda Jordan of the Maine National Guard specifically for golfers.
Lt. Col. Jordan wrote that the National Guard Association of the State of Maine is issuing an invitation for four-person teams to participate in its 14th annual Invitational Golf Tournament Aug. 13 at the Palmyra Golf Course.
Proceeds from the event, she said, “support a scholarship fund for military service members and their families. Last year, four scholarships were awarded to high school students.”
However, the tournament is only open to the first 36 teams that register, and registration must be made by July 31.
The registration fee of $220 per team for the 18-hole tournament includes greens fees, golf carts, prizes, team pictures for each golfer and a chicken barbecue lunch.
For a registration form, call 624-2860 or e-mail darrell.stevens@us.army.mil.
Lt. Col. Jordan also reports that the tournament is seeking hole sponsors for $100 that will include the sponsor’s logo.
The sponsorship commitment date is July 24, and those sponsorships can be made by calling Col. Jerry Dunlap at 430-5292 or e-mailing Gerald.dunlap@us.army.mil.

The book is $21.95 “and will be available at major bookstores in Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft, online at Amazon.com, at local vendors in Milo and through the museums in both Milo and Brownville by contacting members of the respective historical societies,” she said.

Norma Milton of Halfway Home Pet Rescue reports it is holding a tag sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 5, at Valley Woodworking, 6 Carroll St., Caribou.
Additionally, Milton wrote she is conducting a daily tag sale “when the garage door is open, and every weekend, with no set hours,” at her home, 773 South Shore Road, Madawaska Lake in Stockholm.
“We use the honor system of payment at both places,” Milton said, “and people have been very good.”
She added that the “small, state-licensed shelter, which operates on a grassroots effort with a few volunteers,” is “always looking for items to add to our tag sale.”
If you can help, drop off your contributions at the Milton residence or at Beaulieu’s Garage on South Main Street in Caribou.
Currently, Milton reports, the shelter is full with 17 cats and kittens “in our foster care system.”
