NEW BRITAIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Rona Hughey Leighton, 77, wife of 56 years to William Leighton, died July 5, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Homer S. Hughey and Edna Mae (Burbank) Hughey. She graduated from Dedham High School, Massachusetts, and Chandler School for Women, Boston. She was formerly employed by New England Deaconess Hospital, then by the school system of Newport as assistant superintendent of schools. Rona was a remarkably generous person who will be dearly missed by many. She was predeceased by stepmothers, Evangeline Hart Hughey and Margaret Tennis Hughey. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Jeffrey S. Leighton and his wife, Susan, of Tustin, Calif., Diana Whittaker and her husband, Jim, of Zionsville, Pa., Christopher Leighton and his companion, Michael Albers, of Tucson, Ariz., and Jennifer Kulhanjian and her husband, Michael, of Telford, Pa.; and honorary daughters, Emily Nichols of Philadelphia and Eri Ohashi Kano of Yokahama, Japan. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Victoria, Scott, Michael, Kelly, Spencer, Lydia and William; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jaedon; her sister, Sylvia Daniels of Maine; and nieces, Kimberly and Kristen. Her family was her most precious treasure. A small memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the immediate family.
