BANGOR, Maine — The state Department of Transportation has created an online survey for drivers to share views regarding the Interstate 95 corridor in Bangor.

The department, in cooperation with the Bangor Area Comprehensive Transportation System and the Federal Highway Administration, is conducting the study to gather information from those who use I-95 most.

“This section of interstate is approaching 50 years old,” said DOT’s Ed Hanscom. “This study will help identify areas that need improvement and provide a guideline for updating this section of interstate for future needs.”

Traffic data collection for the study already has begun. Additionally, DOT is working with a public advisory committee that includes the cities of Bangor and Brewer, public safety agencies, and major traffic generators in the area such as the Bangor Mall and Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Along with the information received from the public and the advisory committee, DOT will examine traffic counts on the interstate at exit ramps and study turning movements, crash data and traffic incident data.

“With this study we hope to identify improvements that we can make to the highway and interchanges, as well as to the bridges,” Hanscom said. “It may also identify a need for other improvements, or even uncover aspects that need a closer look.”

Those interested in sharing their views about the I-95 corridor in Bangor may do so through the online survey at http://www.maine.gov/mdot/bangori95study/index.htm.

The survey also can be accessed from the www.mainedot.gov homepage by clicking on “planning studies” under the “transportation planning” tab.
