CUTLER – Helena “Arlene” Bryant, 78, passed away July 16, 2009, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. She was born March 31, 1931, in East Machias, daughter of Loring and Helena (Dennison) Griffin. Arlene married Lawrence Bryant, Oct. 17, 1949. She worked for many years at A. M. Canning Co., making many special friends along the way. Her later years in life were spent focusing on her kids and grandchildren. Many mornings Arlene could be found sitting at the table, reading the paper while watching the boats in the bay or as a family favorite, using her binoculars to “watch over” Robbie’s place. Arlene was a wonderful cook and loved to prepare huge meals for her family. She loved having everyone gather together for food and laughter. Arlene was the master of practical jokes and especially loved April Fools’ Day. Halloween was also another one of her favorite holidays because the grandkids would all go to her home to show off their costumes. Many times they would convince their grandmother to get dressed up as well. Playing cards with her sisters, who affectionately named themselves The Captain Morgan Gang, always brought a smile to Arlene’s face. Although never playing by the rules, the “gang” managed to create special memories that everyone will cherish. In 2006 Arlene was able to travel to Grand Manan Island, Canada, for a long awaited trip to visit with relatives and see where her ancestors came from. Although a brief trip, it was something Arlene had wanted to do for many years. Arlene was predeceased by husband, Lawrence Bryant; sons, Loring Bryant and Matthew Bryant; brothers, Lowell and Gardner Griffin; and sisters, Mildred Blanch, Marion Shain, Gertrude Barker and Sonja Cota. She is survived by son, James Bryant and wife, Christie; son, Larry Bryant; daughter, Jan Bryant and Mickey Cleaves; daughter, Ann Bryant and George Wilson; son, Robbie Bryant and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Jennifer Byrant, Stephanie Crane, Camryn Bryant and Matthew Bryant; great-grandchildren, Devin Bryant, Bailey Bryant and Madison Flynn; sisters, Kathryn Antaya, Mavis Laskey, Francis Lord and Norma Hall; many special nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be a graveside service 1 p.m. July 24 at New Cutler Cemetery with Pastor Gary Look officiating. Please join the family at Bay Ridge Elementary School after the service for refreshments and conversation. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to CancerCare of Maine, Healthcare Charities, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04401.
