BANGOR – Gloria (Sawyer) George, 67, a lifelong resident of Bangor, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009, with her family by her side, from metastatic lung cancer. She was born Feb. 22, 1942, to the late Claude and Beatrice (Ireland) Sawyer. Gloria was one of nine children and grew up on Fern Street. In 1959 she met and married Daniel P. George, an Air Force serviceman stationed at Dow Air Force Base. They spent all of their married life in Bangor, where they raised their five children. Gloria worked for W.C. Weatherbee & Sons for 22 years and worked up until she became too ill to do so. Anyone who knew Gloria loved her. She was a kind and caring person and will be deeply missed. Gloria is survived by her four children, Gary and his wife, Laurie George, of Bangor, Darrell George and Kim Dyer of Brewer, Kimberly and her husband, Sid Oakes, of Brewer and April and her husband, Jim McManus, of Seminole, Fla.; six grandchildren who will miss their Grammy, Dylan, Logan, Nicholas, Eve, Emily and Ian; best friend and sister, Nancy Doughty of Hampden; sisters, Barbara Russell of Levant and Jane Huff of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Robert Sawyer and his wife, Edie, of Bangor, Donald Sawyer of Bangor, William Sawyer and his wife, Annette, of East Eddington and James Sawyer of Jupiter, Fla.; special nieces, Kelly McKinnon and her husband, Gary, of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; and Shanna O’Brien and her husband, John, of Hudson; several other nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Judy and her husband, Jim Galvin; and special uncle, Patrick Hart of Erie, Pa. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel in 1978; son, Timothy in 2003; and sister, Joanne. The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at CancerCare of Maine and the Maine Veterans’ Home for their care and compassion of Gloria throughout the past 11 months, while she fought her lung cancer. A memorial reception will be held noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor. A private interment will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, where she will be buried with her husband and son.
