Anyone “who is suffering with cancer, has had cancer or who has lost someone to cancer” is invited to enjoy a free retreat trip Aug. 10-12 to Mizpah in Grand Isle, wrote Suzanne Castonguay of Orland.

“We are trying to fill up a bus” with people “who are interested in going, and we are trying to get the word out,” Castonguay wrote of this exceptional, no-cost opportunity.

Free to anyone who has been affected by cancer, you “may bring someone” with you or bring your family, she added.

Mizpah, created in 1991 by cancer survivor Dick Corbin, “presently has 11 buildings and 15 sites to view on the grounds,” Castonguay explained.

“Many people visit there, yearly. No fees are charged. It is a nonprofit organization.”

Anyone interested in taking the trip is encouraged to call Castonguay, 469-0629; Jacqui Hart, 567-3154 or Tina York, 469-2329 for more information.

Clifford and Rosanne Levine of Pittsburgh wrote recently “to express our unending gratitude” to everyone “who participated in the search for our daughter, Rebecca,” on July 10 “after she was caught in a strong current in the West Branch of the Penobscot River.

“Wardens Tom McKinney and Andrew Glidden of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife coordinated the search with the utmost professionalism, and kayakers Angela Merrill, Paul Yearwood and Zack DiSilvestro heroically found our daughter and transported her to her campsite,” the couple wrote.

“Employees of the Central Maine Forest Service and the state Bureau of Parks and Lands, members of the Student Conservation Association, Nature Conservancy, Chewonki Foundation, Outward Bound, Maine Search and Rescue Team and other people who happened to be near, or on, the river, that day, all contributed to this effort.

“The swift and organized response on the part of these professionals and extraordinary citizens proves that Mainers are caring and dedicated people who will extend themselves to help others.”
