LUBEC – Arthur Anthony Glidden, 64, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at his home after a brief fight with cancer, joining in heaven his loving wife of 41 years, Linda “Sue” Glidden, who passed away June 13, 2008. He was born Sept. 14, 1944, in Lubec, the son of Percy and Mary (Townsend) Glidden. He was a 1962 graduate of Lubec High School, and joined the U.S. Army at age 17. He then met his wife when they were both stationed in New York City. After marrying they made their life in Wallingford, Conn., raising their family. In 1982 Art had the luck of winning $100,000 in the Connecticut Lottery. They then returned to Lubec, and along with his wife operated Bayview Bakery. He was very active in his community serving for the volunteer fire department and on the ambulance crew. He was a member of Washington Masonic Lode No. 37 AF & AM, Lubec, and served the town of Lubec on the board of selectmen. He was a member of West Lubec United Methodist Church giving his “object lessons” that brought laughter and insight to the congregation. He is survived by a daughter, Regina (Glidden) Preston; a son, Michael; grandchildren, Roy, Lisa, David, Shawna and Crystal; siblings and their spouses, Elizabeth (Glidden) Erickson and Eric, Joseph Glidden and Maureen, Charles Glidden and Jean, Peter and Eileen Glidden, and Patricia and Leo Murray; many nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins. In addition to his parents and his wife, Sue, he was predeceased by his brothers, Percy Jr. and Jimmy; and a sister, Dorcas. Art was a dedicated man to his community, always looking for a way to help. He will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at West Lubec Methodist Church with Pastor Bernie Hammond officiating. Arrangements are in care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Lubec.
