WEST CHAPMAN – Elwood “Teaser” Buck, 97, died in his sleep Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at a Presque Isle health care facility. He was born May 5, 1912, “at home in the front room” at the Buck Home farm in West Chapman, the son of Clinton L. and Florence (Fillmore) McGlinchey Buck. In his early years, he owned a lumber camp and often told stories of driving the large loads of logs off the mountain with his team of horses. Teaser was given his nickname by his mother at an early age, as he loved to joke and tease others. He was a potato farmer, taking great pride in his weed-free fields with straight, long rows. He farmed his entire life with teams of horses and one Farmall H tractor. During World War II, he was employed at South Portland Shipyard and had a lengthy career building roads for the state of Maine. In 2005, he was awarded the Boston Post Cane for being the oldest citizen in Chapman. He also was a 50-plus year charter member of the Knights of Pythias Mapleton Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, telling stories while riding the back roads of Chapman or sitting in his favorite rocking chair, while spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Katherine of West Chapman; two sons, Wesley Buck and his wife, Katie, of Mapleton, and Clyde Buck and his wife, Trudie, of West Chapman; and two daughters, Lori Bard and her husband, Tim, of Sanford, Fla., and Leah Buck and her husband, Peter Goheen, of West Chapman. He also leaves a legacy of 11 grandchildren, who were each so special to him, 15 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, many of whom called Uncle Teaser their favorite for the countless adventures he provided. He was predeceased by his first wife, Martha Boyles, in 1959; his daughter, Marla, in 1938; three sisters, Zula Libbey, Dorthey Buck and Helen McLaughlin; five brothers, Hiriam and Sherman McGlinchey, Elra, Ralph and Jack L.A. Buck; and one grandchild, Libby Goheen. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Southside Cemetery, Mapleton, with Murray Boyles officiating. Directly after the service, family and friends are invited to the Buck Home farm, 3590 West Chapman Road, to recall stories and celebrate the long and eventful life of Teaser Buck. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate in Teaser’s memory to Mapleton Elementary School Library Fund, 1642 Main St., Mapleton, ME 04757. Condolences may be expressed at www.duncan-graves.com.
