ELLSWORTH – June Kehaulani (Chadwick) McDonald, 82, died peacefully Aug. 9, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at home. She was born May 20, 1927, in Honolulu, the daughter of Elbridge S. and Sarah (Rickard) Chadwick. When she was 14 years old, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, her mother and three siblings were evacuated to Machias, her father’s hometown, where she graduated from high school. In 1946, she married Roderick McDonald, her high school sweetheart. June was employed as a legal secretary for Dunbar and Vose and a bookkeeper for H. Blaine Davis Estate. She and her family then moved to Ellsworth in 1958. In 1963, June started her banking career at Penobscot Savings Bank and in 1968 went to work at Liberty National Bank, now known as Key Bank. She retired from Key Bank as a vice president in the Ellsworth branch in 1990. June was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served as organist for many years, retiring in 2000. She then joined the choir. June was very active in all church ministries. Music was an important part of her life, next to her family and the church. In her earlier years she had volunteered for many service organizations including The American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, Open Door Recovery Center, Loaves and Fishes and Emmaus Center. June enjoyed the family Saturday night baked bean suppers, Christmas Eve celebrations and family reunions. One of her greatest joys was to return to Hawaii when she was 63 years old, with her sister and younger brother. She is survived by sons, James R., John G. and wife, DeeAnne, and Thomas E. and wife, Karen, all of Ellsworth; daughters, Cheryl L. Smith of Southwest Harbor, Alma T. LaFrance and partner, Michael Bonney, of Old Town, Juliette E. McDonald of Ellsworth, and Monica J. Jackson and husband, Richard, of Fletcher’s Landing; grandchildren, Lisa Young and husband, Jason, Stephen A. Chipman and wife, Tracy, James C. McDonald, Michael McDonald and wife, Erin, Jay McDonald and partner, Jody Layman, Nina McDonald, Justin LaFrance, Matthew McDonald, Sarah McDonald and Savannah Jo Jackson, Warren Smith and wife, LeeAnne, Karen Smith and JoAnne Smith; great-grandchildren, Sierra, Emily, Shelby, Serena, Brady, Katie and Hanna; a loving sister, Alma L. Vane of Machias; brother, Fred Chadwick and wife, Valerie, of Hampton, N.H.; her loving aunts, Patricia Nacua of Maui, Hawaii, and Eleanor C. Clarke of Machiasport; sister-in-law, Arline Staples of Belfast, Ida M. Chadwick of Papillion, Neb., and Gail McDonald of Ellsworth; loving friends, Melanie and Lisa; special caregivers, Michelle, Tina and Rhonda; many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Roderick; her brother, E. Gerry Chadwick; grandson, Michael Chipman; brothers-in-law, Richard McDonald and Donald Vane; and son-in-law, Thomas Smith. Visiting hours will be 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A Mass of Christian burial will be prayed 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at St. Joseph Church, 231 Main St., Ellsworth, with Father Scott Mower, celebrant. Interment will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Longfellow Cemetery, Machias. Contributions in June’s memory may be made to Open Door Recovery Center, P.O.
