ORONO – Bettymae (Gyger) Lutz, 85, died peacefully Aug. 10, 2009, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Ottawa, Ill., the daughter of Lemuel and Irene (Whitney) Gyger. She graduated from Ottawa High School in 1941, and from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., in 1945. She met her husband, Leland, while working for Goodyear in Akron Ohio, and they married in Ottawa, Ill., in September 1946. She was a member of AAUW, Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs, Church of Universal Fellowship groups of Alliance and Daffodil Luncheon, Phi Mu sorority and played in multiple bridge clubs throughout her life. Bettymae led an exciting life by following her husband’s corporate transfers from Ohio to New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Alabama, Texas, and six years in Holland, retiring in Orono in 1986. Bettymae is survived by her husband of 62 years of Orono, and Green Valley, Ariz. – snowbirds for the past few years; three children, James Joseph Lutz of Bangor, Karen Lutz Benbrook and husband, Charles, of Troy, Ore., and John Frederick Lutz and Eric Tolbert of Paris, France; seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters, J. Devon Lutz and wife, Elaine, of Plymouth, Mass., with two daughters, Molly Grace and Abigail Mae, J. Darren Lutz of Plymouth, Mass., Rebecca Lutz of Bangor, Seth Ellis of Rochester, N.Y., Zacary Ellis of Troy, Ore., Alex of Providence, R.I., and Erin of Annandale, Va. In keeping with her wishes, a celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Church of Universal Fellowship with the Rev. Lorna Stuart, celebrant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the church after the celebration.
