COLUMBIA FALLS – Beverly Ann Cotton, 66, passed away Aug. 12, 2009, at her home. She was the only child of the late Theodore and Elva (Worcester) Cotton. Beverly grew up and attended the local school in Harrington and graduated from Harrington High School, Class of 1961. She then attended Washington State Teachers College, now part of the University of Maine system in Machias, where she matriculated in the Class of 1965. She first taught English, language arts and drivers education at Waldoboro High School and then taught the rest of her 35 years at Medomak Valley High School, Waldoboro. While there she served as a member of SAD 40 Curriculum Committee and also represented the district on the Maine Council of English Language Arts, serving as the secretary for many years. Beverly was a people person as she belonged to many organizations and groups; some of these were Golden Glow 4-H Club, membership in United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Maine Retirees Association National Education Association, secretary of Lambda Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, the local diabetes support group and as secretary of Harrington High School Alumni Association. Beverly was well known for organizing an impromptu afternoon of games or a visit to a restaurant. After receiving a kidney transplant in January 1986, she became very involved with the Kidney Foundation of Maine, serving several years on its board of directors, as a member of its speakers bureau, as a chapter member of the Mid Coast Chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Maine, and as a promoter of Organ Donor Sunday in its various communities where she lived. Beverly is survived by her cousin, Philip and his wife, Valerie Worcester, of Columbia Falls. A service of memoriam will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Faith United Methodist Church, Route 1, Columbia. Family is invited to visit 9 a.m. until the hour of the service with public visitation 10 a.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will be after at Columbia Cemetery.
