ROBINSON and WAREHAM, Mass. – David Matthew Smith was found Aug. 11, 2009, at his residence in East Wareham, Mass. Although his unexpected death has left many friends and family saddened, we can find peace in knowing he has gone home to be with the Lord. He was born June 15, 1953, in Mars Hill, to Keith Everrett Smith and Sandra (Barrett) Smith Leighton. Raised in Robinson, David shared many special moments with his siblings and friends. He graduated from Central Aroostook High School in 1971. He was a trustee of Bourne United Methodist Church and he was the owner of S & S Drywall. David had a great sense of humor and was the first person to call on birthdays or special occasions. Anyone who knew him would attest to his dedication to his children, Selena Berlied and her husband, Brad Berlied; as well as his son, Jeffery R. Smith. He was a loving grandfather to his two grandsons, Bradford and Derek Berlied. David was predeceased by his father, Keith Everrett Smith; his brother, Jeffery Harry Smith; and his uncle, Carl Smith. He is survived by his mother, Sandra Barrett Leighton; brothers, Keith “Bart” Smith and wife, Sharlene, Nathan L. Smith and wife, Ruth, and Kevin W. Smith and wife, Sandra; sisters, Kim Smith Delano and husband, Peter, Chloe Boulier Shaw and husband, Calvin, and Leslee Smith Mahon and husband, Timothy. All of David’s nieces and nephews were special to him, they are Echo Kaply-Smith, Allison Smith Charette, Matthew Smith, Amy Smith Gillen, Natasha Smith Brewer, Pippin Smith, Naomi Smith, Michael Allen, Samuel Delano, Jacob Delano, Andrew Shaw, Amy Shaw, Julie Shaw, Jonathan Shaw, Carly Smith, Gabrielle Smith, Erik Smith, Johannah Mahon and Michael Mahon. He had 12 great-nieces and great-nephews, Sadie, Elizabeth, Natalie, Isaac, Ryder, Pepper, Riley, Megan, Kaden, Abbigail, Abby and Ethan. Many special aunts, uncles and cousins loved David, including Aunt Norma Tweedie, Aunt Margaret Murdoch, Aunt Joyce Witherell, Uncle Ivan “Buzzy” Smith and Uncle Carl, and their families. Many people were special to David and he touched the hearts of so many. David will be missed by his girlfriend, Sally and her family. Special friends include, Rob and Pam, Molly, Fotini and family, Wally and family, Greg, Johnny, Jamie, Becky and Maria. Family and friends will gather for visitation 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at United Baptist Church, Church Street, Mars Hill, where a funeral service will begin 1 p.m. officiated by Pastor Mitch Ross and assisted by the Rev. Ivan Smith. A reception will be held at the church after the burial at Bridgewater Corner Cemetery.
